St. George's Cathedral in Addis Ababa

A popular pilgrimage site for Rastafarians, St. George's Cathedral Ethiopia is an Orthodox Church built in 1896. It's one of the top tourist destinations in Addis Ababa, and has been awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. Visitors might find the church closed unless services are scheduled, but the exterior of the octagonal shaped building is just as fascinating as its interior. There's also a small museum on site with lots of relics and paintings, so a trip to the Cathedral is well worth the time spent.

  • Who created the artwork on the outer walls?

Several renowned artists designed the mosaics and paintings visitors see today. One of those is Afewerk Tekle, an Ethiopian artist famous for his stained glass work and paintings.
  • Was anyone famous crowned in the Cathedral?

In 1917, the Empress Zewditu was crowned here. She was the first female African head of state to be recognized internationally. In 1930, Emperor Haile Selassie took over Zewditu's throne upon her death, and was also crowned in the Cathedral. He had been her regent and appointed heir.
