Red Terror Martyrs' Memorial Museum

Memorializing a brutal time in Ethiopian's recent history, the Red Terror Martyrs' Memorial Museum (RTMMM) provides a place for the public to learn and acknowledge the violence of this past genocide and move forward in healing. Between 1977 and 1978, a reign of fear and death prevailed over Ethiopian men, women and children, instigated by Mengistu Haile Mariam. The Museum exhibits include photos and artifacts, plus a library of books and other materials related to the Red Terror and the military junta known as the Derg.

  • What types of events are held at the Museum?

RTMMM is home to a conference hall that can be rented out for special film screenings or other events. The Museum itself often hosts special happenings here. One of the Museum's most important sponsored events is the Martyrs' 5-Day Event, held in late April. Each day is dedicated to a theme - children, women, song - and includes special guests, films and discussions.
  • Can anyone use the Museum Library?

Yes. The RTMMM Library is free and open to the public for research and communication. Currently, it holds about 3,000 volumes plus other documents and resources related to the Red Terror. Book donations are welcome. There is Internet access available and other services - just ask a staff member for assistance.
